We have made the decision to join the industry pioneers and adhere to the overwhelming evidence regarding two-stage dentals. The benefit of undertaking dental works in this way are for the patient, the owner and the staff.
The benefits include:
- Reduced overall anaesthetic time
- Quicker recovery
- Less invasive where possible
- Better procedure planning
- Better cost estimation
- Better diary planning for staff
The Process
Stage 1
The process begins with every patient having a pre-operative assessment with the veterinary surgeon. During this appointment, details of procedure will be discussed and explained. Your pet will then be booked in for Stage 1 which involves:
- Pre operative blood test (recommended)
Pre-anaesthetic blood screens are recommended in all patients. - Intravenous fluid therapy (recommended)
Intravenous fluids are recommended to maintain blood pressure and circulation during anaesthesia. - General anaesthetic
General anaesthesia is undertaken and monitored constantly by our Qualified Nursing team. Your pet will have multiparameter monitoring throughout the procedure and recovery which ensures gold standard of care - Full mouth radiographs
Full mouth dental radiographs which allows us to visualise the roots of each tooth. These x-rays will also allow us to review the jaw bones - Full dental charting
A full and complete dental chart of teeth can only be achieved when the pet is safely asleep as this allows us to assess all 4 planes of each tooth and assess the complete gum and oral health - Full scale and polish
Oral hygiene is achieved by scale and polish of all teeth which removes all plaque and tartar build up again allowing a full and complete assessment. - Assessment and planning of all teeth requiring extractions.
- Discharge appointment with the veterinary surgeon in order to discuss the findings, as well as further treatments (if necessary)
With good preventative dental care for your pet – which our nursing team can help with – some patient’s procedure will be completed at stage one. Any teeth which are mobile during stage one are extracted immediately and your pet’s procedure again may complete at stage one. However, for any teeth requiring extraction that have fixed roots will be identified, planned, discussed with the owner and a plan made for the second stage dental procedure.
Stage 2
- Intravenous fluid therapy (recommended)
Intravenous fluids are recommended to maintain blood pressure and circulation during anaesthesia. - General anaesthetic
General anaesthesia is undertaken and monitored constantly by our Qualified Nursing team. Your pet will have multiparameter monitoring throughout the procedure and recovery which ensures gold standard of care - Oral surgery to extract the identified teeth
- Suturing of the gum where the teeth have been extracted
- Radiography to confirm complete removal of tooth roots and/or repeat x-rays
- Post extractions if necessary.
- Medication for pain relief and antibiotics if indicated
- 10% Discounts as for Stage I for Pet Health Club Clients.
